SOCIAL AND RACIAL JUSTICE NOW

"NEUTRALITY is at times a graver sin than belligerence."

- Hon. Louis D. Brandeis (1856 - 1941)

The JBLS 9th JD, a Jewish bar association, shall not remain silent in the face of social upheaval, massive demonstrations and all violence occurring daily across our nation.  Racial injustice must not be countenanced anywhere in America, particularly by those in positions of authority.  It is our responsibility to publicly comment in support of SOCIAL AND RACIAL JUSTICE NOW.

A year ago, we publicly raised our voice when we declared “our commitment to combatting anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, sexism and racism in all its forms.”  We further stated that we “remain committed to a society of dignity and justice for all.”  That declaration was in response to what was then the disgraceful surge of anti-Semitism including shootings in synagogues in America by white supremacists.

In our 2019 public declaration, we warned about the rise of the “ominous momentum” of hate and evil throughout our land.  Since then the division and hate across America has grown.  Like the disease it is, hate and racism have grown openly into our “other” pandemic.

Like never before we must support constitutional free speech, peaceful assembly, equal justice and an end to divisiveness. This includes, but is not limited to, acts of racism and white supremacy, which continue to plague our nation.  Violent agitation and other lawless behavior occurring on the streets likewise must not be countenanced and is hereby condemned.

We stand united with all men and women of good will, particularly our Black American brothers and sisters, demanding full equality and an end to systemic racism. It is our obligation as members of the legal profession to bring about rapid positive change and social justice for all.

In conclusion, we must never forget the appalling events which brought us to this tragic moment, and we fully support rapidly achieving at long last EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER THE LAW.
